PEA
Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) is an endocannabinoid-like compound with extensively documented anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antimicrobial, immunomodulatory and neuroprotective effects.
Much like CBD, PEA acts on multiple molecular targets while modulating multiple inflammatory mediators to provide therapeutic benefits in many applications, including immunity, brain health, allergies, pain modulation, joint health, sleep and recovery.
At the moment most studies in humans and veterinary medicine have focused on its use as a multi-modal treatment in the management of chronic pain - in particular from neuropathic or inflammatory sources. Results have shown decreased pain scores, and increased in quality of life with minimal side effects - making it a well tolerated adjunct to normal pain management protocols.
Formulation
The formulation of PEA plays a crucial role in its bioavailability and efficacy. Studies have demonstrated that ultramicronized PEA formulations have superior oral efficacy and absorbability, leading to higher plasma levels in both healthy and disease conditions.
Typically marketed PEA formulations contain either: (i) unprocessed PEA (frequently referred to as naïve PEA or pure PEA; from 100 μm up to 2,000 μm); (ii) micronized PEA (PEA-m; 2–10 μm range); and (iii) ultramicronized PEA (PEA-um; 0.8–6 μm range).
Here at Balance Bites we offer ultramicronized PEA options for dispensing. Please contact us for a consult if you wish to know more.
